Quaint and malicious old Senator Bill Heffernan is at it again!

Member’s letter to the Editor (with permission)

2 May 2007

In this week’s Bulletin Senator Heffernan repeated his previous distasteful remarks about Julia Gilliard, Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition being childless as being “barren”.

“So rude, crude and unattractive as it was … If you are a leader, you’ve got to understand your community” Senator Heffernan said.

“One of the great understandings in a community is family, and the relationships between
between mum, dad and a basket of nappies”

Well that rules out all those celibate Catholic popes, cardinals, bishops, priests and nuns from leadership doesn’t it!

Marital or parental status is irrelevant to suitability for any occupation. Skill, life experience, formal education, knowledge and empathy with the population are all relevant to being a politician. Even being an insensitive crude farmer seems to qualify.
